Blue Light By Smartphone, Computer Displays Can Accelerate Blindness: Study

Are you hooked on your own smartphones, laptops, and tablets? The blue light emitting out of those electronic devices can influence your eye retina and result in age-related macular degeneration, according to a recent research.

Macular degeneration, an incurable eye disease that leads to significant vision loss beginning on average in an individual in their 50s or even 60s, is that the death of photoreceptor cells from the retina. These cells need molecules known as retinal to feel light and activate a cascade of signaling to the mind.

The findings demonstrated that blue light exposure causes retinal to activate reactions which create poisonous compound molecules in photoreceptor cells.

"We're being subjected to blue light constantly, along with the eye's lens and retina cannot block or signify it," said Ajith Karunarathne, Assistant Professor, the University of Toledo in Ohio, US.

Since photoreceptors, generated from the eye, are useless without retinal, one requires a constant source of retinal molecules to see.

"It is toxic. If you glow blue light on retinal, the bronchial kills photoreceptor cells since the signaling molecule on the membrane dissolves," clarified Kasun Ratnayake, doctoral student researcher in the varsity.

"Photoreceptor cells don't regenerate at the eye. When they are dead, they are dead for good."

In the analysis, published in the journal Scientific Reports, once the team introduced blue light to additional cell types in the body, like cancer cells, heart cells, and nerves, they died as a consequence of the conjunction with retinal.

"The retinal-generated toxicity by blue lighting is universal.

To shield your eyes out of the blue lighting, wear sunglasses which can filter both the UV and blue light out and avoid taking a look at your mobile phones or tablet computers from the dark, he proposed.
